Alfa Romeo Racing returns to its origins.

Two historic cars at the presentation for the new season

February 14, 2019

On 13 February 2019, the new Alfa Romeo Racing team was presented for the start of the new Formula 1 season. Also at the event in Balocco were two classic Alfa Romeo cars, embodying the history of a brand famous for its competitiveness and sporting success.

In 1950, an Alfa Romeo driven by Nino Farina won the inaugural Formula One World Championship: now Alfa Romeo is returning to where it all started in a bid to record new successes.

On 13 February 2019, the new team Alfa Romeo Racing was presented in Balocco. Before being introduced to their cars for the new Formula 1 season, drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi took to the track behind the wheel of a Stelvio and a Giulia.

The event in Balocco was also an opportunity to retrace the brand’s history with two classic Alfa Romeos that starred in memorable motorsport seasons: the Alfa Romeo GP Type 159 "Alfetta" and the Alfa Romeo Type 33 TT12.

The former made its debut in the 1950 Italian GP and won the inaugural Formula 1 world title thanks to Nino Farina’s victory. Although the plaudits for the 1950 season must be shared with the 158, which Farina drove to victory in all the other GPs, the 159 Alfetta alone was the shining star of the following season. In fact, it was behind the wheel of the marvellous specimen on show in Balocco, that Juan Manuel Fangio won the first world title of his stellar career and thereby enabled Alfa Romeo to retain its Formula 1 constructors’ crown.

By contrast, the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 TT12 wrote itself into Alfa Romeo’s history with victory in the 1000 km Monza in 1974, and above all with its title-clinching performance in the 1975 World Sportscar Championship, when it won 7 out of 8 races.
